The Premier League campaign has started on a high note with 6 wins in 7 matches. The draw against Stoke spoils the 100% record; and a goal difference separates Man United from first placed Man City.
Many pundits have predicted that this is the season of the Manchester clubs, but Jose Mourinho begs to differ, when directly asked to predict the chances of the Red Devils winning the League saying, “It’s too early, it’s too early – only seven matches,” Mourinho said after the Red Devils win 4-0 against Crystal Palace.
Rivals, on the other hand have dampened all Champion talk by slating the quality of opposition faced by Manchester United, so far. Title leaders Man City who lead by a goal difference have already faced top ten teams notable Chelsea where they won with a depleted team of its two main strikers.
The Premier League is a marathon; winning ugly and winning pretty. We have some good takeaways from both these wins with the defensive-controlled win vs Southampton top of mind that had many questioning whether we re returning to last season's capitulation of draws.
There have been great displays at Old Trafford this season and thrilling encounters with high goal margins. The Mourinho bus has only been tactically packed and for all his humility, Mou has created a strong striking and defensive squad. Danny Blind spoke about Mourinho's core six; De Gea, Valencia, Matic, Pogba, Mikhi, Lukaku around whom he has been building his squad.
This fantastic composition is boosted by the youthful promise of Rashford and Martial; who are hell bend on outshining, outscoring, outpacing and out assisting each other as they compete for Mourinho's attention in the starting XI. This is a great problem to have. Let's not forget Fellaini's resurgence, especially after his display vs Crystal Palace where he scored a brace. He's stepped up after Pogba's injury. Together with Herrera and Carrick, the team's spine is strong.
With Bailly continuing to show his prowess and Jones enjoying longer fitness spells, maybe the defense can also have it's own solid partnership. We are also watching, with interest, Luke Shaw's return to match fitness and let's not forget the dazzling performances Young and Blind have given. The most anticipated performance, for me, would have to be Victor Lindelof's EPL features. The little we've seen of him have been promising, but as the boss said, the EPL is a strange animal. Last but not least, I feel like could be just one Instagram video away. What exciting times we live in.
It may be too early to start Championship talk but I am sure excited for the season ahead.
