Michael Carrick has been appointed as the new Manchester United captain while Herrera will be his deputy according to Neil Custis of The Sun.

The veteran midfielder is set to take over from Wayne Rooney who appears to be headed back to Merseyside with his boyhood club Everton.
Carrick, 35, signed a new one-year contract extension last season while United boss Jose Mourinho has labelled Herrera one of the smartest players he has met.
Wayne Rooney who was appointed captain by Sir Alex Ferguson was pictured leaving a gym in Liverpool yesterday and it is widely expected he'll end his 13-yr association with Manchester United by the end of this week.

Meanwhile, United continue to falter in the Transfer Market with Mourinho said to be frustrated by United activities as pre-season looms.
The club is still optimistic of completing at least three more signings before the start of the season.
Alvaro Morata's deal continues to be discussed as well as Nemanja Matic still being on the cards but it appears for now, the boss has decided to elect his leaders first.

The midfield duo will be expected to portray the leadership qualities akin to former United captains Giggs, Beckham and Keane but who else is better other than the longest serving player assisted by the most passionate of them all?
Paul Stretford (Rooney's agent) was spotted at Bill Kenwright's (Everton chairman) office yesterday. It now looks like a matter of time for the deal to be confirmed.

Whatever happens regarding Wayne Rooney, his place in United history books is assured, having become the leading goalscorer of all time at the club and winning everything there was to win!
